“Umbral is conceived as a threshold between the ordinary and the extraordinary, a spatial and sensory transition into the collective energy of the night.”
This proposal explores the design of a nightclub in the dense urban fabric of La Paz. The challenge was to create a vibrant, immersive space for social gathering and music, while maintaining architectural coherence and sensitivity to materials, acoustics, and spatial rhythm. The project reimagines the nightclub not just as a container of nightlife, but as an experience of space, light, and cultural resonance.

Concept
The concept revolves around rhythm and transition, spatial sequences that reflect the journey from exterior to interior, from anticipation to release. The design emphasizes layering, contrast, and controlled visibility to guide users through moments of intimacy, energy, and collective experience.

Although contemporary in aesthetics, the project draws from Andean principles of layering and sensory richness. The choreography of textures, light, and shadow evokes a spatial rhythm rooted in traditional rituals and festivals—where architecture serves as a backdrop to collective celebration.

Programmatic Layout
The plan is divided into clearly defined zones: entrance and cloakroom, main dance floor, lounge areas, bar, bathrooms, and a backstage zone for staff.
Circulation follows a looped path, encouraging movement and discovery, while also providing quiet pockets for retreat and social interaction.
Acoustics and ventilation were studied to ensure comfort despite the high-intensity use.
Materiality and Spatial Language
Exposed concrete and raw brick form the structural and tactile base of the project, evoking the textures of La Paz’s urban topography.
Dark-toned acoustic panels shape the soundscape while creating a soft, enveloping atmosphere.
Punctuated lighting—neon strips, recessed LEDs, and color accents—adds dynamism and spatial orientation.
Metal mesh and translucent partitions filter light and views, offering a play between visibility and mystery, a nod to Andean textile layering.
